The Real Reason for the Al Davis-Marcus Allen Feud

I don't know how many of you read the autobiography of Marcus Allen.  It is a very boring piece of work.  If you can manage to find it buried in the morass of boredom, in the book and elsewhere we can learn about the conflict Marcus had with Al Davis.  Nowhere is it explicitly stated what the conflict is about but to me it is obvious.

Money.

What else could it be?  What else do players complain about with franchise management?

Al was not the type of guy to dislike a player based on "lifestyle", as is the popular expression used to describe the feud.  Marcus wanted more money, whether it be during a contract negotiation or however he presented the idea to Al, obviously rubbed him the wrong way.  This is not expressed in the book, only the aftermath.

If there is anything crystal clear about Al Davis is it was never a good strategy to try and muscle him when it comes to anything Raiders.  He's not going to be swayed with your reasoning to pay you anything. He will pay whoever he wants whatever he wants.  End of conversation.

Marcus was a great running back, no question about it but he was a lousy negotiator. There are all kinds of caveats to the feud.  This was in a different era than today when it comes to the players association legitimacy and representation, free agent rules and so forth. The bottom line is Marcus felt he was worth more than he was currently getting and Al denied him an increase in salary.  Al saw it as a means for Marcus to flaunt his wealth southern California style with his buddy O.J. Simpson and whoever else.

That is why the decision of Mark Davis to ask Marcus to light some kind of torch ceremony in honor of Al means nothing. It does not end a feud or close a chapter in Raiders history.  Al would likely not approve of the gesture and wherever he is now, he probably still hates Marcus.  Likewise, Marcus still hates Al.  Al denied Marcus significant dollars, benched him in the prime of his career.  Al did not like the Hollywood attitude of Marcus. There's nothing that will erase the bitterness on either side.

This is why it is surprising the involvement of Marcus in the torch lighting was even necessary at all.

It does matter bro, the Raider Nation is beyond Marcus and it's beyond Al at this point frankly.
The Nation has to heal and get our old guys back.
The Nation needs Marcus, and every old player, we need to get that energy flowing the right way again.
Being a Raider fan should be a matter of Pride and Poise.
Right now the Nation is damaged deeply and the return of Marcus Allen is another step in the right direction.

I believe the bad blood between Al and Marcus began when Al got Bo Jackson to play after baseball season. Marcus had just signed a new contract a year or two previously. He saw Bo making the same if not more than he and Bo only played half a season for it. Marcus wanted to make more money, and frankly he was worth more, but he went about it wrong. Marcus was a great back, a workhorse and I wish he would have stayed with the Raiders, but egos got in the way.

^ Al doesn't have a daughter and Marcus seemed content with his main woman. He's not even close to being the jerk O.J. was

Healing and positive karma is what the orginization and the Raider Nation needs. I'm happy to see Gruden and Allen light the torch. It's a step in the right direction for everyone.

I have also heard the rumors from people inside the Raiders regarding Marcus Allen and an affair with Al Davis' daughter, and yet, as far as I can tell, Mark Davis is the only child of Al. I also remember hearing about Marc Wilson's engagement to Davis' daughter back in the day. Curious ...

Regardless, Marcus and Gruden lighting the torch had to happen for the Raider Nation. Clearly it had to happen for the Davis family and they got it done. RIP in Al.

Al did not have a daughter. Mark was his only offspring. That's a fact so whatever rumor that existed is pure bullshit.

No it was the fact that Marcus Allen had sex with a mistress of Al DaVis that he didn't like.

Anyone ever notice that when Marcus Allen got benched in the early 90's & eventually got released to Kansas City that the Raiders have SUCKED ever since?!?! Grantedd, the Raiders were good for 3 years from 2000-2002 but it was evident that decisions made by the hierarchy back then were the beginning of the end to the success to this once proud franchise. Marcus Allen was a warrior! I read his book and I totally disagree with what anyone else has to say
